Dawuna, Glass Lit Dream release party
Tip-Top Bar & Grill
Brooklyn, NY 11238
Blank Forms celebrates the vinyl release of Dawuna’s Glass Lit Dream at Tip-Top Bar and Grill, a Bed-Stuy establishment of more than fifty years. Recorded in his Brooklyn apartment and originally self-released to word of mouth acclaim in November 2020, Glass Lit Dream was picked up, remastered, and distributed by London label O___o? last year. Glass Lit Dream conjures a nocturnal feeling and naturally flows from gospel, soul, and R&B into more ambient, electronic, industrial sounds, tapping into the deep history of Black music in America. Dawuna’s lyrics drift in and out of these gloaming soundings, oscillating between incantation and confession while ruminating on freedom, religion, endings, and beginning again. Ife Radio (MIKE & Taka) will open the show with a DJ set.
Dawuna was raised in Nairobi, Kenya and Fairfax County, Virginia. He trained in cello before experimenting with digital audio mixers and electronics in high school, leaving home soon after to join Richmond’s DIY scene. He decamped for New York in 2019. This will be Dawuna’s second performance with Blank Forms.
This is a 21+ event.
